UL 508A Industrial Control Panels

UL 508A standard control panels leverage proven technologies from the industrial, infrastructure, and machinery manufacturing sectors to deliver superior solutions for our customers' target applications. Our automation equipment is easy to integrate and offers a long service life, helping customers, partners, and equipment manufacturers enhance productivity, reliability, safety, and secure connectivity.

The UL 508A Standard for Safety for Industrial Control Panels covers requirements for industrial control panel enclosures, general-purpose industrial control panels, and general industrial machinery, as well as requirements for special-purpose industrial control panels (such as those used for air conditioning and refrigeration, crane controls, elevator controls, flame controls, marine applications, etc.).

In accordance with the U.S. National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), this equipment may be installed in general-purpose environments. However, if certification is required for use in the hazardous environments described below, compliance with the UL 508A standard is a prerequisite.

Industrial Control Panels with I/O Connections to Hazardous Environments

For industrial control panels featuring input/output (I/O) connections to hazardous environments, the applicable safety requirements are outlined in UL 698A—the Standard for Safety for Industrial Control Panels Relating to Hazardous (Classified) Locations. For installation in general-purpose industrial control cabinets containing intrinsically safe circuits that extend into hazardous locations—as defined by the U.S. National Electrical Code (NFPA 70)—the classification according to the relevant hazardous location ratings is as follows:

* Class I, Division 1

* Class I, Zone 0 and Zone 1 (AEx)

* Class II, Division 1

* Class III, Division 1

* Zone 20 and Zone 21 (AEx)

Industrial control cabinets communicating with hazardous locations must utilize UL-listed safety barriers to further ensure that the extended circuits maintain intrinsic safety protection. Furthermore, as a requirement, each control cabinet must be accompanied by control drawings; the primary purpose of these drawings is to ensure that the equipment can be correctly connected and installed at the intended site of use.
